The need to begin/accelerate the implementation of SAFe®

What is SAFe?

SAFe is the world’s leading framework for scaling Agile across the enterprise. Used by hundreds of the world’s largest organizations, SAFe sustains and drives faster time-to-market, dramatic increases in productivity and quality, and improvement in employee engagement.

Why SAFe?

While Agile methodologies have been adopted by more and more organisations, SAFe is employed to ensure alignment, collaboration, and delivery across large numbers of agile teams. It was developed by and for practitioners, by leveraging three primary bodies of knowledge: agile software development, lean product development, and systems thinking.

A lot of organisations that were early adopters of Agile were able to reap the benefits and get ahead of their competitors. However, as with Agile, the adoption of SAFe in the South African market remains relatively low compared to their global peers. Those organisations that have embraced the benefits improve their ability to collaborate and deliver in a more consistent and visible manner across their organisation. In an environment where software projects are still failing at an alarming rate, SAFe is just one of the tools to assist organisations to deliver value to their (internal and external) customers on a consistent basis.

The current version, SAFe 5.0, focuses on Lean enterprise and business agility as well as the following five core competencies:

  • Lean agile leadership: Lean agile leaders drive change and operational excellence, leading by example to help ensure teams reach their potential. This involves modeling SAFe’s Lean agile mindset, principles, and practices.
  • Team and technical agility: Teams must possess certain vital skills and adhere to Lean agile practices to create well-designed solutions quickly. Ensuring the technical agility of teams is especially important, as they are the ones who ultimately perform the actual work that will be delivered to your customers.
  • DevOps and release on demand: The establishment of a continual, ongoing pipeline for deliverables is vital for creating value to meet your customers’ needs.
  • Business solutions and Lean systems engineering: The more organizations facilitate Lean agile practices to drive blueprints, development, and deployment, the more innovative they can be.
  • Lean portfolio management: A sound organizational strategy that includes financial considerations, portfolio management and compliance-related aspects is essential to SAFe success.
